MAD MIKE SPEAKS OUT!
Cyclorama - A Soundtrack or Rock Opera for the War?
Posted on the Styx Webboard on www.melodicrock.com

With the war pending in Iraq, the troops will probably need some inspiration tunes (as they do every war) to keep their spirts up. Well, I stumbled across something a little different this time. I noticed how eerily the new Styx CD Cyclorama played out like the soundtrack or even a Rock Opera to Desert Storm II (or whatever they may call it). Allow me to explain with giving you the track name, where in the story it relates and a quote from the song. I know that a lot of these songs were aimed towards DDY, so you might have to change your mindset to think another way.

Keep in mind, I am a producer and a designer so I don't think like everyone else (by reading this, that will be clear). No, I don't have a lot of free time on my hands, it's just that this CD happened to come out at the same time all of this was going down and I couldn't help but notice the relationship between the songs and the conflict with Iraq.

I know froy(ed) is going to have something stupid to say about this post so I reply in advance...
jackass!

1) Do Things My Way: The united coalition finally tells the U.N. that they are irrelevant and if they want to prove themselves to be useful in the world that they will have to uphold their resolutions. If not, it will be done by way of the coalition.

Or we can play this guessing game
I call your bluff you do the same
We're just wasting time
Wasting all my time, listen

If you wanna have it your way
Yeah you gotta do things my way
If you really wanna have it your way
All you gotta do is do things my way

2) Waiting For Our Time: The troops are getting restless waiting for the word to go to work.

Looking up from where I stand
I see the vapor trail
Of a jet plane in the sky

Here the wheel is in my hand
But there's no wind in my sails
And life is drifting by

Still I hold on and wait
I know it's not too late
And my breeze will come

3) Fields of the Brave: One soldier thinks ahead to what people will say about Iraq after the war is over. He starts to wonder if it will be anything like wars of liberation in the past.

They got what they gave
By their God they were saved
And I say this as I pray
I can't help but dream of
The days these were fields of the brave
The fields of the brave

4) Bourgeois Pig: Clearly a slam against Jacques Chirac forgetting who has bailed his country out time and time again. Thanks for nothing Jacques. We are now at war because you refused to help disarm Saddam peacefully.

Bourgeois Pig
You got too big
You forgot where you came from

You big pop star
You took it too far
You better get humble and then some

5) Kiss Your Ass Goodbye: The war is under way and the anthem begins as the troops say to Saddam "Kiss Your Ass Goodbye". And now... liberation of the Iraqi people has already begun.

What's left to say
When it's over everyone but you remains
Little children will
Still go out and play
Just like it's any other sunny day
Oh yeah

In the ending you can bet
Everyone's an equal

Kiss your ass good-bye

6) These Are The Times: A trying time for the soldiers as they battle in the heat and sand storms. They find out what it means to be a "Band of Brothers". Patriotism is streaming through their blood and they know that what they are doing will lead to peace.

And from those who've seen the light beyond
We know the end will bring tranquility...

These are the times we find out who we really are
This will be when a true friend stands at your side
One more like me
Who wants to believe in the truth of all we experienced
To live again to jump back into the fight
Someone like me who wants you to live

7) Yes I Can: During a small break in the battle, one soldier starts to think about his wife and knows that he has to do everything he can for his country and still come home to her. Thougths of her are preserved in his mind so he can keep his sanity.

And I can see you standing in the yard
Tending the roses in your garden
The sun is shining through your cotton dress
And I will freeze this moment here in time
I could live forever in your garden
Ah yes

Yes I can

8) More Love For The Money: The battle scene cuts back to the USA finding everyone wishing the war was over so we can get back to some form of normality. Prices are going up and the stock market coming down.

More love for the money
That's all I'm after
More Buzz for the honey
And a bit more laughter

Why is that so much to ask
More for the money
Price had better come down fast
ok...that one was a stretch

9) Together: Back to Baghdad. A soldier is writing to his girlfriend back home. Seeming very optomistic because the coalition is winning, he looks to brighter days ahead for Iraq and looking forward to coming home to her.

We could use another summer of love
It's cloudy here
But there's a blue sky up above

If we could only fly away from here
We could say good-bye to all the tears
And maybe we could spend the rest of our years

Together, together

10) Fooling Yourself (Palm of Your Hands): Saddam's empire is quickly crumbling and he feels his power slipping away.

You see the world through your cynical eyes
You're a troubled young man
I can tell...

You're fooling yourself
If you don't believe it
You're kidding yourself
If you don't believe it

11) Captain America: The Iraqi people know that the coalition of the willing is winning the war and that soon they will be free. They show their appreciation to the American troops by calling them Captain America! This boosts the troops spirits even higher.

Captain America what do you see
Millions of your brothers say they'll fight to be free
Who could have known you would be the chosen one
To kick start our dreams...

Where there's love
There is grace
And there's hope left in this place
And the smile on your face
Gives me faith in the human race

12) Killing The Thing That You Love: Saddam's regime has been destroyed. He survives the war but is taken prisoner by the troops. It is the end of the most horrific regime in our lifetime.

Brick by brick you built a mansion
Piece by piece it seems
You're tearing it down

Once you walked so tall and handsome
Now nobody even wants you around...

You plant plutonium silos
Then you blister from the sun that's too bright
Like a vampire stepping into the light
Just a victim of your own greed...

13) One With Everything: The war is over and the Iraqi people have been liberated. There is celebration everywhere as the people of Iraq prepare to live in freedom. The troops are praised.

Smiling ear to ear
It's something in the atmosphere
Every star above reflecting in your sea of love
This is not a dream
It's just the way it's always been
You've got to rise above it all

Somewhere down the road that we follow
We'll be one with everything
I know as soon as tomorrow
We could be arriving

14) Genki Desu Ka (Japanese for How Are You): The troops return home and are greeted with showers of flowers and cheers. Welcome home, how are you, great to see you....THANK YOU!

Genki desu ka, genki desu ka, genki desu ka
Won't you sing with us now

Genki desu ne

Brilliant! Just brilliant! You have shown that music can be interpreted in so many different ways. Your song by song discussion is believeable certainly. Its so refreshing to read such a post here rather than the idiot "I know more than you know" crap thats the norm.

I once heard a musician say "When I was a kid, I was obsessed by magic and all things magical, when I grew up I realised the closest thing to real magic, was music". You have proven this with your post. A song (or album) can mean so many different things to so many different people. That is surely "magic".

The only problem with this theory is when you find out that beautiful deep and meaningful song that saved your life as a teenager, was actually written about someones lost cat or some such. Sometimes its best to not know the real inspiration behind a song, it can take some of the "magic" away.
